Staff Spotlight
Fourth grade teacher Dana Maas
This week's Staff Spotlight highlights fourth-grade teacher Dana Maas. Perpetually smiling and using her lessons as a stage, she's a delight to work with for her colleagues and students!
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 8th year teaching. I've been at Haycock for five years, all of them in fourth grade.
What were you like as a kid?
I was very active and dramatic as a kid. I played several sports, went on auditions, and performed made-up shows with my sisters.
What made you want to work in a school?
I have been working with children since I was 12 either with babysitting or training them in soccer. I have also been doing acting and theater since I was a small child. So, teaching seemed like the perfect combination of two things I love.
What do you love about Haycock?
I love the welcoming community. I started the year that we were all virtual, and even though we were all separated, the community here still fostered a close, caring environment.
What makes you smile or relaxes you?
A good book and a long bath.
What books are you currently reading?
Phillipa Greggory's books about the War of the Roses
What other media entertains you?
I do not listen to many podcasts, but I have recently stumbled upon a couple that I find fascinating--A History Of, and The Curious History of Your Home.
I also love TV shows about history and travel and enjoy a good romantic comedy.

What fills your time outside of school?
I enjoy reading, traveling, cooking, playing piano (badly), and spending time with friends and family.
Our students love "fun facts" about people and topics. What's a fun fact about you?
I went to the White House and sat on (former First Lady) Barbara Bush's lap for Lady's Home Journal when I was young.
