You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Monday, November 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Glasgow Middle School Cafeteria. Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available. If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage.

Kiss and Ride Drop Off and Pick Up Safety Reminders

As the weather gets colder, we understand more families are using the Kiss and Ride line. To ensure a safe and smooth process for everyone, here are a few important reminders:

  • If you are dropping off or picking up your child by car, please use the Kiss and Ride line on the Westmoreland side of Haycock.
  • Please pull your car forward in the line as far as possible.
  • Please have your child enter and exit your car on the building side, not into the parking lot.
  • Please do not park and walk your child from Westmoreland Street or from the parking lot area.  This puts our students in unsafe situations.
  • Cars should not park in the lot, rather, remain in your car and drop your student off.
  • Follow the directions of the staff members and safety patrols stationed in the Kiss and Ride area, traveling in a one way direction and abiding by the signs located in that area.
  • Please do not park and leave your car in the Kiss and Ride line.  This blocks others trying to move-up in or exit the line.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and ensuring their day begins and ends on a positive note!

The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community. November is National Family Engagement Month! This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers.  Over 40 years of research have shown that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in their children's education. Here are some suggested activities and recourses in which families can participate together:

Dear Haycock Families,

It was great to see so many of you in the hallways enjoying our Kindergarten story book character parade on Thursday morning.  Our students also had a great time with their favorite book door decorations contest, a long standing tradition at Haycock. Our SCA judged the decorations and announced the classes that won before students left for home on 10/31. All the student created favorite book door decorations were amazing to us!

Teachers are working hard on grades, report cards, and finishing up parent conferences today and tomorrow.  We are so fortunate at Haycock to have the dedicated, hardworking, and caring staff that we have here.❤️

Elementary Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report soon, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

See below for ideas on how to help your child at home!

How to Help Your Student at Home Reading and Writing

Please see this new FCPS Literacy Resource for Families.

We believe families are key to developing literacy. This page linked above has resources to help you encourage literacy at home. It also has information to help you partner with your student's teacher and our Haycock staff in supporting your student's literacy progress in reading and writing.

Fall Screener Parent Reports

The following screener assessments were administered to our students this fall.  Here are the dates when the results for parents will be or were available in SIS ParentVUE:

Kindergarten (VALLSS, EMAS, CBRS) expected in PVUE Documents  by 12/6

Grades 1-3 (VALLSS) in PVUE Documents on 10/25

Grades 1-6- (iReady) in PVUE Documents on 10/31

McLean HS Share Program

Share of McLean's Holiday Program kicks off on November 16! This year, Jack, a regular Share volunteer and McLean High School student, is leading a toy collection drive. He has created an Amazon wish list with items for kids ages 1 to 11, ranging from $10 to $15. Please check out the Amazon wish list If you would like to contribute, preferably by November 14.

November, Native American Heritage Month, is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

🗳️ Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in).

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Haycock

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 2, and Friday, December 13. Any student may take the survey at home, if preferred. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

  • Books are borrowed for 3 weeks, with 2 renewal extensions allowed
  • Email and/or paper reminders sent home periodically if books are overdue
  • No overdue fines

Haycock’s library resources not only support literacy but also aim to inspire a lifelong love for reading. The skills students gain from reading (solo and together) contribute to their overall academic growth and personal development.

Looking forward to a partnership with families to make the library a place of exploration, learning, and growth for our students.

Please feel free to contact Ms. Sklar, Librarian, with any questions. Her email is [email protected].

Video on Impact Aid

The Impact Aid form is a survey that school districts use to identify and verify federally connected students. The form is required to receive Impact Aid funding from the federal government.

The federal government requires school districts to complete the Impact Aid form each year because enrollment changes. The information on the form is protected by student privacy policies and federal and state laws.

Impact Aid is a program that helps local school districts that have experienced increased expenditures or lost property tax revenue. The program can help with costs for school materials, substitute teachers, transportation, and utilities.

Steps to Access the Survey in ParentVue Step 1: Log in to SIS ParentVue

Only the enrolling parent can access SIS ParentVue through https://sisparent.fcps.edu/.

Step 2: Select the 'Online Packets' tab

The 'Online Packets' tab is located in the top right of the ParentVue screen.

Step 3: From the tiles at the bottom of the page, select the 2024-2025 Federal Impact Aid Survey'

The survey is one of several tiles. Make sure the parent is selecting the Federal Impact Aid Survey located under the 'Packet Descriptions' section.

November is National Family Engagement Month

We have seen and research shows that families play such an important role in their child's education. Here are some key questions to ask your child
to establish  building conversations:

  • What are your hopes and dreams - both in this school year and in the future?
  • What did you enjoy most and least about the previous school year?
  • What can we work on together to help you feel more comfortable this year?
  • What questions did you ask today?
  • Who did you play with at recess?
  • Who is the funniest student in your class?
  • Tell me an interesting fact about your teacher?
  • Did you help anyone today?

Consider each of the roles families play here

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating:

Halloween is a time of fun and harmless frights, but parents shouldn’t have to worry about their children’s safety while trick-or-treating. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, Patient First is offering some important reminders, and a special service this Halloween season.

  1. Know the route that your children will take if you do not go with them.
  2. Younger children should go with adults.  There should be at least one adult for every four children.
  3. If possible, give your children a cell phone and check in with them during the evening.
  4. Set a time for everyone to be home.
  5. Make sure no one eats any treats until they have been inspected by an adult.
  6. Wear bright clothing or reflective gear.

To keep your kids safe after dark, Patient First is offering free safety blinkers at each of our medical centers during the month of October (one per person, while supplies last).  These blinking lights can be attached to Halloween costumes to improve visibility.  Blinkers are available at the front desk of any Patient First location—no registration or medical care is required.

As an added precaution, Patient First will offer free digital X-ray imaging of Halloween candy.  This fun service allows trick-or-treaters, to see what is inside their treats, like peanuts or other surprises.  It also makes visiting the doctor’s office a positive experience, which can help reduce anxiety for future visits when they are sick or hurt.

X-ray imaging can also provide parents additional peace of mind about the treats their children receive by possibly detecting objects like metal, or other solid substances.* Parents still need to provide supervision since some foreign materials may not appear in X-rays.

Bring your bag of candy into any Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center from October 27th through November 1st between 6pm and 8pm for a free X-ray screening.

Patient First doctors are available to discuss Halloween safety.  Contact Todd Krickler at (410) 487-4178 or [email protected]  to set up an in-person interview, or via Zoom.

Domestic violence is a family, community and public health issue with widespread ripple effects that impact all parts of our community. It will take all of us to build a peaceful and safe Fairfax County.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men will experience sexual violence, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner during their lives.
  • More than 43 million women and 38 million men will experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Research also shows survivors of domestic violence have significantly higher rates of long-term health problems, including diabetes, frequent headaches, chronic pain, difficulty sleeping, asthma, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

We can prevent domestic violence across our community by addressing the root causes of the problem. We can eliminate attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, environments and policies that contribute to domestic violence and promote strategies that stop it. Together, we can reduce our acceptance and tolerance of violence, and reject norms, practices and policies that place girls and women at increased risk. We can confront gender and racial injustices.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

On October 16, all school cafeterias will participate in “X Marks the Tray”, where lucky students can find a sticker on the bottom of their hot entree container randomly. This can be redeemed for our popular whole grain, reduced sugar sweet treat at the end of the lunch period. Encourage students to check their entree containers for a sticker after eating and bring the container to the cashier by the end of the lunch period to receive their sweet treat.

Haycock Hello 10.7.24

Haycock Hello1 month 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Dear Haycock Families,

This week we celebrate and show our appreciation for our wonderful custodial team.  They work hard every day to keep our school clean and safe for our students and staff.  Join us in showing our gratitude to them every day and especially this week.

Expect to receive an email this week confirming your plans or asking you to notify us of any changes to plans for your student(s) for our next 3 hour early release on Monday, October 28.  Please respond to this email only if the plans for your student have changed.  If we do not hear back from you, we will assume that the plans will remain the same as they were for the September 23 early release Monday.

For the October early release Monday, we also ask that no requests for changes to plans be made after the end of the day on Thursday, October 24th. Last minute change requests increase the chances we will make an error, and we are trying very hard to ensure that every one of our students is safe and supervised.

Additionally, for the October early release Monday, SACC will be providing afterschool supervision beginning at our 1:05 dismissal time, which is a change from September.  As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Wednesday is bike, walk, or roll to school day!  It's a fun way to get exercise and start the day in an active way.  If students choose to ride their bike to school, make sure they are prepared to lock their bike when they park it in front of Haycock. Remind students to come in door 1 so we can recognized them for participating in this fun activity.

We hope to see many of you this Thursday evening for the PTA STEAM Night.  This PTA sponsored, family-friendly event is for all ages. Our very popular STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) event will feature Mad Scientist, plus the Animals Program by Critter Connections. Enjoy fun STEAM activities, vendor tables, and Haycock's own Capital Bots team and First Lego League team!

With appreciation for your partnership,

📚 Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

    2nd Grade Cognitive Ability Testing

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to all our second grade students the mornings of October 16, 17 and 18.

The CogAT measures students’ reasoning abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal areas. Note that this assessment is not a test that requires any preparation, as it is designed to assess a child’s natural thinking and problem-solving skills. Please ensure your child is well-rested and arrives on time to school.

    First Quarter Parent Conferences

All K-6 classroom teachers will be offering quarter 1 conferences.  You should hear from your child's teacher about sign up times.  November 4 and 5 are being set aside for these parent-teacher conferences.

To guide this conference and familiarize yourself with the quarterly progress report, a copy of a blank progress report is available in multiple languages. Family-facing curriculum resources are also available on the FCPS website. Teachers will also discuss VLA Reading Plans with guardians whose children qualify for these interventions.

Kindergarten teachers will not assign grades at the end of the first grading period but will instead include comments on student progress reports which focus on citizenship skills, routines, and an intervention support comment (EIRI) is available, if necessary.  Kindergarten teachers will share information about VLA Reading Plans with guardians whose children qualify for these interventions.

Next 3-Hour Early Release Monday is 10/28

Our first three hour early release Monday went smoothly.  The most challenging part of our plan to ensure all students were safe and accounted for was last minute change requests from parents. For the October 28 early release Monday, we ask that all change requests from parents be made no later than the end of the day on Friday, October 25.

We understand that SACC will be providing supervision for the October 28th three hour early release Monday, and we will factor that into our plans.

We will send out confirmation emails to all parents the week of October 7th with our understanding of your plan for your student for the October 28 early release day.  There will be a form included in that email for you to indicate a change in plans if needed. If we do not hear back from you, we will assume that your plans for your student(s) remain the same as the plan for the September 23 early release Monday.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpagefor additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

    Haycock Family Engagement Survey Results

All families were sent a Family Engagement Survey last spring.  We had 178 families respond to this survey.  Here are the survey results for your reference.  We take this feedback seriously and have incorporated what you said into our plans for this year.

The items that we were highest on included the following:

    • My child feels physically safe at school
    • This school is safe, meaning it provides an environment where
students and staff are free from emotional or physical harm.
    • This school values the diversity of its community.
    • I feel regular school attendance supports my child's academic
      success.
    • There are opportunities for me to volunteer at my child’s school.

We put a priority on our partnership with parents and families.  Please reach out to one of the administrators or our family liaison, Paulette Farmakides, if you have questions or suggestions regarding family engagement at Haycock.

Gunnell's Chapel Historical Marker Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony

Congratulations to former Haycock students Noa Herzog and Carys Barnes. Their work when they were in 4th and 5th grade led to the installation this past weekend of a historical marker at the entrance of Clemyjontri Park honoring the history of Gunnell's Chapel.  This is part of the Fairfax County/African American Historical Marker project.  Take a look at what our former Haycock students, now Longfellow students, brought about through their research the next time you are at the park. Kudos to Ms. Gray and Ms. Duffield for partnering to facilitate this project for our students almost three years ago.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE

First Early Release Monday on 9/23

The reason for the early release Mondays is so that classroom teachers can complete up to 27 hours of additional training on evidenced based literacy instruction required by the Virginia Literacy Act.

Our first early release Monday will be next Monday, September 23.  For students whose families have indicated that they will be dismissed at 1:05, they will depart school in the same manner that they do on usual days.

For the families who indicated that their child needs afterschool supervision by Haycock staff, those students will remain at Haycock until 4:05 and depart school in the same manner that they do on usual days.

There are a small number of families who we have not heard back from.  Our office staff is calling those families to learn their plan for their student(s) on 9/23.  We want to make sure that we know the plan for every one of our students to ensure their safety.

If your child is a bus rider, instead of using the Here Comes the Bus App on the early Mondays, use https://busdelay.fcps.edu/

For those students who attend afterschool SACC, we have received confirmation that SACC will be available at 1:05 beginning with the October 18 early release Monday.

From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. A Note From Your Family Liaison: Paulette Farmakides

    [email protected] 703-531-4001

Much research has been done over the last four decades and the data shows how important data shows how important family engagement is in ensuring family success.

Students whose families are actively engaged in partnerships with the school and community are fare more likely to:

    • earn higher grades and test scores;
    • pass their classes;
    • attend school regularly;
    • have better social skills; and
    • graduate and go on to postsecondary education.

It's important to note that these results occur with students regardless of family income or cultural background.

    As family liaison, I:

    1. provide the connection between parents, community, and school staff to support student achievement and facilitate communications;
    2. provide information about FCPS and the school; and
    3. direct families to appropriate FCPS and community resources.
Monitor Your Child’s Use of FCPS Devices

FCPS provides tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on FCPS devices. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which provides a list of the top sites their child visited and offers the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

    2024-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document details expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.

Parents and caregivers should talk to their children about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30.

    Participate in SR&R Focus Groups

Each year, FCPS reviews the SR&R to ensure it reflects our commitment to equity and the goals outlined in our 2023-30 Strategic Plan. To that end, FCPS is providing parents and caregivers, students, and staff opportunities to lend their voices to the annual review.

The Office of the Chief Equity Officer is partnering with K12 Insight to host SR&R focus groups. All middle and high school students, current FCPS parents and caregivers, school-based staff, and central office staff who work with students will receive an invitation to attend a focus group.

If you have a question about the SR&R Focus Groups, please contact Kathleen Walts Executive Director of Equity and Student Relations: [email protected]

    Haycock Hello 9.9.24

Haycock Hello2 months 1 week ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

    Dear Haycock Families,

We had another busy and fun week.  Dr. Reid, FCPS Superintendent, visited Haycock on Tuesday.  Our student SCA officers did a great job of welcoming her.  We were proud to show her around and share the many terrific things that are happening at our school.

Please note that the first three hour release Monday is coming up on 9/23.   Many thanks to all the families that have indicated the plan for their student on those early release Mondays.

This week, we will be emailing all families that did not respond to the survey sent out by FCPS or who indicated on that survey that they were unsure of their plans.  If you receive this email from us, please respond to the embedded survey immediately.  We are working hard to ensure that we know the plan for every one of our students.

For those who did respond to the survey, we will also email you with what we understand is the plan for your student.  If that is correct, there is no need to respond.  If a change needs to be made, please follow the instructions in the email about how to make that change.

For students that we do not hear back from parents about, we will assume that they are going home at 1:05 in their usual manner.  The buses will make their runs at the 1:05 dismissal time and return at the 4:05 regular dismissal time for any bus riders remaining.

Finally, please note that immunization records must be up to date for all students by September 30.  See information and further details below.

    With appreciation for your partnership,

    Liz Beaty, Principal [email protected]

    Heather Boyd, AP   [email protected]

    • A health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
    • A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with their religious tenets or practices.

    Find more information on immunizations.

    Kiss and Ride Safety Reminders

We ask that you not park when you come through the Kiss and Ride line.  It backs up the line and puts students in unsafe situations to be crossing through the car line.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The staff members who assist in the Kiss and Ride line are working to keep all our students safe, and we ask you to remember that and extend them grace and understanding.

Help at Haycock as a Student Monitor

Are you passionate about making a positive impact on our students and school community? We’re looking for a dedicated parent or community member to join us as a Student Monitor. In this important role, you’ll help create a safe, orderly, and supportive environment for our students throughout the school day.

    Role Overview:
As a Student Monitor, you’ll be paid hourly to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, lunch areas, recess, specials, and during arrival/dismissal. This is a wonderful chance to connect with students, supporting their success and well-being both individually and in small groups.

    How to Apply:
If you’re interested in contributing to our school community in this meaningful way, please email Krystal Styles, AP, at [email protected], to set up an interview.

We look forward to welcoming you to our team!

Please see this additional information about the SEL Screener and other family resources from our counselors.

    Dear Haycock Families,

We hope you and your family are enjoying the last holiday weekend of the summer as we honor Labor Day.

If you were unable to attend Back to School Night or did not view the video from our School Board Member, Robyn Lady, here is her message to us.

For those families that wait for our walkers outside door 12, we ask that you remind your child not to climb the tree closest to that door.  We want to make sure we avoid accidents and broken bones.  Plus, our tree has lost some limbs because of the climbing.  Thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

Three Hour Early Release Monday Update

Thank you to all who completed the Early Release Monday Survey sent out by FCPS.  We are working our way through the responses and will be contacting families that did not respond, who were unsure of their plans for the early release Mondays, or who left that question blank on the survey.

Our first early release Monday is September 23.  Please note the change in the November early release Monday.  That was moved to December 9.

Below are the Mondays that we will dismiss at 1:05 p.m. so that staff members have the opportunity to complete the required training that is part of the Virginia Literacy Act.

Three Hour Early Release Monday dates for Haycock

    September 23, October 28, December 9, February 24, March 17, April 28, and May 19.

    2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to familiesregarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheetto your child’s school by Monday, September 9, 2024.

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. We will notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before we conduct a lockdown drill.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

    ⚠️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this videoto learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

🎤Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Reid

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid invites you to share your questions or concerns regarding Fairfax County Public Schools. Your voice matters! Community Conversations will be held this Fall 6:30-7:30 p.m. on:

    • Monday, September 9, at Holmes Middle School
    • Monday, September 23, at Newington Forest Elementary
    • Monday, September 30, at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary
    • Monday, October 14, at Fairhill Elementary
    • Monday, October 21, at Virginia Run Elementary
    • Wednesday, October 30, at Herndon Middle

Childcare and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Find out about other opportunities to connect with Dr. Reid.

✨ 2023-30 Strategic Plan: Foundation of Four Pillars

While the five goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Planfocus on student success, the four pillars describe what FCPS must do well to reach our goals for all students:

    • The first focus of the pillars is on teaching and learning. We want to make sure each and every student has access to excellent and inclusive learning environments, and that instruction meets students’ individual needs.
    • The second pillar focuses on our connection with families and our communities. We cannot do this work alone. Strong partnerships are key to our students’ success.
    • The third pillar is centered on our hiring and maintaining a world class, diverse workforce. We want to make sure our incredible employees have what they need to help our students thrive.
    • The fourth and final pillar centers on how we bring this all together. We remain focused on creating a culture of equity, excellence, and accountability where data guides our decisions.

We’re continuing our Staff Spotlight series with Paulette Farmakides. You may know that she’s been a Haycock parent for many years, but now she’s also contributing her energy, humor, and smiles to the front office. We are truly delighted to have her with us: https://haycockes.fcps.edu/features/staff-spotlight-office-assistant-paulette-farmakides🌟

We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.

Early Release Monday Form- Action Item

If you have not done so already, please take a minute and complete the Early Release Monday form.  If you have multiple students at Haycock, you will need to complete the short form for each of them.  This important data is being collected by FCPS and will assist us with planning for the early release Mondays.  We need 100% response rate, so please complete the form today.

Thank you to all the families that have already completed this form for us.❤️

Students who remain at school on those early release Mondays will be supervised by instructional assistants, school staff not involved in the required training, central office staff, and volunteers. Your child will not be working with their teacher due to the state mandated training they must complete. This time on the early release Mondays will be allocated for students to complete homework, STMath, Lexia, MyOn, independent reading, and other similar tasks.

    Celebrate McLean- 2024

Please save the date for August 29th 2024 for Celebrate McLean. It will run from 4pm-6:30pm, prior to our football home opener vs Meridian. We will have games, food, DJ and tables from our clubs and sports. We look forward to another amazing day!

Kiss and Ride Drop Off and Pick Up Safety Reminders

If you are bringing your child to school by car, you should come through the Kiss and Ride line which is on the Westmoreland side of Haycock.

Do not park and walk your child from Westmoreland Street or from the parking lot area.  This puts our students in unsafe situations. Cars should not park in the lot, rather, remain in your car and drop your student off.

Follow the directions of the staff members stationed in the Kiss and Ride area, traveling in a one way direction and abiding by the signs located in that area.  We want all students to be safe and to begin and end their day in a pleasant way.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Transportation/Bus Updates

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification Systemor use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at  703-249-7100 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.
