Staff Spotlight
Office assistant Debbie Felix
We are continuing our Staff Spotlight series of blog posts to introduce the community to more of our staff. This week highlights Debbie Felix, a longtime member of our Haycock community.
How long have you worked in schools?
This is my eleventh year in education and ninth at Haycock.
What were you like as a kid?
I was a tomboy in elementary school and very competitive (I had two older brothers). In high school, I was an over-achiever. Pom Pom, 1st chair alto sax, marching band drum major, and yearbook editor. I took Advanced Placement classes and after-school college classes. I also worked a part-time job.
What made you want to work in a school?
I started by subbing at my kids' preschool, and then working as a preschool assistant. I loved it. When the job at Haycock opened, I jumped on it. I love interacting with students, parents, and the community.
What do you love about Haycock?
The welcoming atmosphere, the amazing staff, and the best co-workers.
What makes you smile or brings you calm?
My family, my dog, and my co-workers make me smile. Reading and hanging out by the water relaxes me.
What books are you currently reading?
One of my favorite books I read this year was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.
What other media entertains you?
My favorite TV show was "Ted Lasso". My all-time favorite movie is the original Willy Wonka. I also enjoy listening to indie music.
What fills your time outside of school?
Reading (I love my book club because I read books that I wouldn't normally select).
Puzzles (jigsaw, crossword, etc.).
Hanging out at Smith Mountain Lake.
Travel.
Our students love "fun facts" about people and topics. What's a fun fact about you?
I love to travel. I quit my advertising job in 1998 and traveled alone for two months. I visited Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, and China.
