Joining us this week for our Staff Spotlight series is Hayock's helpful technology coach Ben James.

How long have you been teaching?

This is my 22nd year in education. I taught second, third, and sixth grade before coming to Haycock in 2016 as the technology coach.

What do you love about Haycock?

It should go without saying that the people here are the best. So many helpful people supporting the work that we do on a daily basis!

In my job, it's important for those around me to be willing to take risks. Neither students nor teachers are a monolith of abilities. Everyone can learn to use technology in new ways to teach, learn, or show how you've done either. The most important part is a willingness to try new things. Haycock has students and teachers aplenty who have that growth mindset. It makes my job a lot of fun!

What makes you smile or brings you calm?

Playing games with my sons. Listening to music. Laughing with friends. Being out in nature, no matter the weather or season.

What books are you currently reading?

I just finished The Shift to Student Led by Catlin Tucker & Katie Novak. I'm in the middle of UDL and Blended Learning: Thriving in Flexible Learning Landscapes, also by Dr. Tucker.

At home, I just finished Cloud Cuckoo Land  by Anthony Doerr. Such a great ending by a marvelous author!

What other media entertains you?

I listen to many different podcasts (80+ at last count), but All Songs Considered is a weekly love. I love to spin blues, jazz, funk, and many other genres at home.

It took almost 10 years, but I've watched all the American Film Institute's Top 100 Movies.

What fills your time outside of school?

Trail running, mountain biking, sports parenting, photography, climbing, snowboarding.

Our students love "fun facts" about people and topics. What's a fun fact about you?

My dad got his doctorate one year after I finished my master's at the University of Florida, so I got to attend three straight commencements. Senator John McCain mistakenly congratulated me when we ran into each other after his speech on campus.
