Staff Spotlight
PE Teacher Nisha Hecht
Our Staff Spotlight series kicked off in 2022 with PE teacher Nisha Hecht. That year, we had five different staff members share more about themselves. Nisha is the only one who's still at Haycock!
How many years have you been a teacher at Haycock?
This is my eighth year here. It's my 15th year overall as a teacher.
What do you love about Haycock?
I love the community here at Haycock. Our students are such a joy to teach. One of the very special things about being a specialist is seeing the kids every year -- last year I had my first class that I had taught from kindergarten until sixth grade. It is such a special experience!
What makes you smile or relaxes you?
What makes me smile -- my family. It's been such a joy raising and watching my daughter grow with my amazing husband. The little things in life with them makes life that much better!
What books are you currently reading?
I am not currently reading anything -- it's hard to find time! Hoping to do some reading over winter break! My go to authors are James Patterson, Mitch Albom, Sophie Kinsella, and Mary Kay Andrews.
What other media entertains you?
TV Shows: I love a good reality show, a good crime show or docuseries. My current favorites are Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building. My favorite band is Linkin Park. I also love listening to 90s/2000s dance music -- especially in the car!
What fills your time outside of school?
My hobbies include running (longest distance to date is a 10K), working out, and trying to get back to having a social life! I love spending time with my husband and daughter -- just doing family stuff is super fun. I love when my family comes to visit me or we go to NY to visit them. NY Pizza and Bagels are the best!
Our students love "fun facts" about people and topics. What's a fun fact about you?
I don't know if it's necessarily a fun fact -- but my daughter and I have stitches in the same exact spot and got them at the same exact age -- 4 years old!
Is there anything else you'd like to share about yourself that wasn't asked?
I started my own little project my second year here -- with collecting college/university flags to be displayed in the gymnasium. Growing up on Long Island, in New York, I had never heard of University of Virginia or Virginia Tech, and it seemed like our students only knew Virginia schools. My thought was to share all of the wonderful colleges and universities that are around. All the flags that you see have been donated by staff or the community.
If you don't see one, please donate today! We'd love to share it! Go Adelphi University!
