Staff Spotlight
Third grade teacher Nicki Thomas
This week's Staff Spotlight introduces you to Nicki Thomas. She's a former member of fifth and sixth grades' teams. She's now part of our dynamic third grade team.
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 12th year in education and my sixth at Haycock.
What made you want to work in a school?
After I had my first child, I asked myself, "How can I make a difference in the world?"
I knew I wanted to help kids or animals--I wanted to give the voiceless a voice. Ultimately, I decided if I help teach students about every living thing having an important role on Earth then I could contribute to a thoughtful and respectful community.
What were you like as a kid?
As a kid, I loved animals. I had a bunny, a dog, a bird, and a hamster-at one time! It was a lot of work, and I loved the cuddles.
What do you love about Haycock?
I love the people at Haycock and their willingness to grow and learn. I love that my daughter attends a school I can trust. The teachers teaching my child are happy, thoughtful, and caring. The staff are supportive and caring. We are encouraged to work together because we all grow when all are involved.
What makes you smile or relaxes you?
The spa make me smile and relax while gardening makes me smile when I see the final product.
What books are you currently reading?
Benchmark Advance Teacher Resource System and Math Fact Fluency.
What other media entertains you?
I recently finished The Lincoln Lawyer, and I am ready for The Diplomat! Political programming is very interesting to me; however, I am not as interested in reality!
What fills your time outside of school?
Cross stitch, watching family movies with popcorn, and staying organized! However, I find myself gravitating to American history sites and memorials...
Is there anything else you'd like to share that we didn't ask?
I am from Asheville, North Carolina. Seeing all of the devastation and destruction from Hurricane Helene is heart-wrenching. The community that has come together to help neighbors in need is a testament to a community's strength when working together.
