The Virginia Readers' Choice Books are Here!
Encourage your student(s) to check them out!
All Haycock students are invited to participate in the Virginia Readers' Choice program. The main purpose of the program is to read for pleasure.
This optional program provides students the opportunity to choose the winner of the Virginia Readers' Choice Award. This noteworthy distinction, awarded annually since 1981, is a highly-respected award for children's literature. Each school year, the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) selects 10 books for each of the four different grade divisions (primary, upper elementary, middle and high school). Students in the state of Virginia are invited to read the books selected for their level and vote for their overall favorite title. These votes are tabulated across the state and the winning titles are announced in May.
For the lists of books and more information, please visit the Virginia Readers' Choice page on the VSRA website.
Here is how the VRC program will work at Haycock:
Kindergarten-Grade 2: Ms. Oskin will read all 10 primary books to students during their library blocks. After reading all 10 books, the students will vote for their overall favorite.
Grade 3: Students will hear book talks and watch book trailers during their library time on the primary and the elementary level books. Students who choose to participate will be required to read or hear four or more books at one or both levels and complete a book review form for each.
Grades 4-5: Students will watch book trailers on the elementary level books at a time that is convenient for their classroom teacher. Those who choose to participate in the program will be required to read or hear four or more books at their level and complete a book review form for each.
Grade 6: Students will watch book trailers on the middle level books at a time that is convenient for their classroom teacher. Those who choose to participate in the program will be required to read or hear four or more books at their level and complete a book review form for each.
Grades 3-6: Participants will be invited to vote for their overall favorite title in April. More information will come later!
**Students can access book review forms on the Library Blackboard site (Google Form and paper copy available). Paper copies are also available in the library.
